WORK IN PROCESS Oceanic Plankton (and News About My New Life)

PLANKTON - Watercolor (30 x 30 cm)

PLANKTON – Watercolor (30 x 30 cm)

Delicate forms, building the basis of the ocean’s food chain. My first choice : watercolor. Paper warps, it’s a bit thin, I put it under books and it will be ok tomorrow. I’ll continue to experiment with this form of drawing and painting.

It has been a week now that I definitely left my dayjob in order to become a full time artist. It was time, and I wonder why I have not done it earlier. On the other hand, you have to feel ready to take action like that, and leave all the secret fears behind you (artist = poor:).
I am rich, and I’m not talking about money. I’m thinking in terms of “ideas, visions”  I am wealthy, I am a millionaire and I want to share that fortune…

I have to find my own rythm in this new life.

Now it (ideas in the form of drawings and paintings etc) can just bubble out of me, I give time and energy to those ideas and then take them outside so that others can see them. With Kim we are preparing the artmarket in Germany on June 23 (she’ll arrive here in Paris next Sunday) and our exhibition there together with a third artist, Verena from Germany.

I’m into Plankton, Whales and Shipwrecks and will give you more images soon.

Oh, also: finally Summer has arrived, olé !

Setting Up Still Lifes in the Studio

Yesterday morning I went to the market here at Nogent sur Marne, brought home a this bouquet of Peonies, and three African necklaces, had a nice chat with the owner of the market stand, a Senegalese guy.

I brought the flowers home, put the in a vase and water, then I headed out again to the local DIY shop and got three big and two middle-sized canvases.

I spent the whole afternoon and part of the evening setting up a still life with the peonies, taking photos, trying to prevent the cats from adding their two cents…:).

This is work, and this is fun. To have fun at work, what could possibly be better?

Working for an Exhibition

16 x 22 cm egg tempera on canvas

16 x 22 cm egg tempera on canvas

Work in Process. Kim, Verena and I have begun to paint for our exhibition in July. I haven’t done much yet, two big canvases, and one little (above). The two big ones I cannot show you as they are in Germany. Or wait, perhaps I have a little snapshot of the first one:

Acrylic on canvas, approx.60 x 80

Whale’s Head – Acrylic on canvas, 60 x 80 cm

I had to work with Acrylics because I did this painting in a workshop and it had to dry quickly. That’s the thing with the egg-tempera, the painting needs more time! That is why I like it, too.

Using acrylics and using egg tempera, these are two completely different ways of painting. With the egg tempera, I take the time to ground the pigments myself, I mix the medium with linseed oil and eggs, sometimes I add resins, then I mix the fine powder of pigments with the medium. I begin with white, on a glass plate. I clean the plate every time I begin to mix a darker color… you end up grounding for hours, and you haven’t yet touched the canvas:)

That is why I don”t paint right now, I have still to do my day job for one month, and when I come home in the evening, I don’t feel ike paint, I just want to relax! Everything has it’s time. The paintings’ time will come, soon!!:) I’m excited!

Love from Paris

All This Glowing on the Paper – MOMIGAMI RESEARCH

Momigami paper research - Journalpage- paper, gouache, acrylic medium
Momigami paper research – Journalpage- printed GEO magazine paper with photos and an article about Jack Kerouac’s THE ROAD, gouache, acrylic medium, colored pencil
Paperresearch Journal- Momigami collage paper , gouache, acrylic medium

Paperresearch Journalbook - Momigami collage paper , gouache, acrylic medium, I love how the colors work together in this sample. This would be a colorcombination I'd like to use in a bigger painting. What works in little format, works in big format. The challenge would be to be able to reproduce all the little "stories" happening in the tiny crinkles of the paper and on the colored surfaces. The relationships between the colors, Ultramarine, Viridian, Cadmium Yellow, White, Quinacridone Violet, all this glowing on the Ochre of the paper

Paperresearch journalbook

I don”t have any complete work to show you, as I have been doing research for a new project  and still do.

I have played around with crumpling up paper. Momigami technique, you can find that on the internet,  then painting the crumpled paper and collage it. I keep everything in this spirale book and painted the pages with gouache before glueing the momigami paper in with acrylic medium. Also, there was this full moon last night which I could not see but feel, still now, feeling as if I’m going to transform into a werwolf any minute now…
