Sunny Pictures of Paris for a Rainy Day

Paris, May 16th. We are all waiting for the sunshine, but for now the sun is not “happening”. I have more sunny pictures for you, let’s continue our walk through Paris. We are still in the 6th (Quai Voltaire) and in the 5th arrondissement (Nôtre Dame, St. Michel). Narrow streets with old houses, grands boulevards, galleries, boutiques…Enjoy the colors.

Setting Up Still Lifes in the Studio

Yesterday morning I went to the market here at Nogent sur Marne, brought home a this bouquet of Peonies, and three African necklaces, had a nice chat with the owner of the market stand, a Senegalese guy.

I brought the flowers home, put the in a vase and water, then I headed out again to the local DIY shop and got three big and two middle-sized canvases.

I spent the whole afternoon and part of the evening setting up a still life with the peonies, taking photos, trying to prevent the cats from adding their two cents…:).

This is work, and this is fun. To have fun at work, what could possibly be better?

Anchor

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

Inspiration in the cupboard

Inspiration in the cupboard

I am in the creative process, researching with watercolor and egg tempera and other techniques. In the meantime I am trying to understand my camera so that I can shoot photos and make them look like I want to…. Automatic is ok, but not always.
My camera took these pictures, not me:) On Automatic mode. I mean, I did nothing but look for the things that inspired me. The light that day was incredible, so that was a main help too, and the charm of this colorful place. A walk in Palma de Mallorca on an early December morning….

Weird, those classifiactions on NNDB, don’t you think?

Well, let’s continue our window-shopping!

We still walk on Boulevard Haussmann, and Rue Tronchet towards the “Madeleine”. Shalimar, I always loved this name and the scent, and I like this poetic decoration.

This is one of the famous “Paul” bakeries, once a shop specialized in ivory and scute, (I just learned this word “scute”, I hope it’s correct)  called “THE TURTLES”

This is opposite of the church Madeleine, it’s ERES, very (very) expensive swimming suits and sun dresses

”Petit Bateau”, very famous brand for kid’s underwear, expensive and “bon chic bon genre”, meaning a bit bourgeois :)

I liked this decoration in the shoe-shop Rue Tronchet, those shoes are not “bon marché” = cheap

I have still more photos for you in my bag for the next post! Take care and have a wonderful day !

“The Glowing” – and more from my studio

The Glowing - Egg Tempera Painting on canvas - 80 x 65 cm (31.5 x 25.6 in)

Another commission painting, and I hope my friend will like it. The paintings always look better in real than on the photographs…As there are many layers of paint here, you can see the brushstrokes when you are go near the canvas… It took me some time to get used to the handling of the eggtempera-paint. I have mixed the eggtempera (which is in fact the medium) myself and mixed it with Sennelier pigments. I have been keeping these mixtures in the fridge in little plastic containers, and they are still ok, some are a bit dry and smell a little like fish ;) but you can re-humidify them with more eggtempera (which is egg, linseedoil and water).  It’s a little like cooking, when you prepare all that.

La Garderobe et le frigo

This is my entrance door with the wardrobe/fridge corner. The fridge is too big to put it anywhere else. The upper part of the wardrobe is used as ….guess what: …..bed for the cats…..

The Stolen Glance and my studio

Trainpeople – The stolen glance – Moleskine Notebook Sketch

I don’t often try to put people in “situations” when I draw them, (except Miss Doodle) , on the contrary, I isolate them from their context, mainly cause I don”t have the time and also because that would be boring, as the context is always the same old train.

It is interesting to pick one person, separate her from the surroundings, and draw that person, fix it on a sheet of blank paper. There’s only her and me. The lady I drew this morning looked at me all the time, and I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable, as that would have made ME uncomfortable, so I just stole some glances:) , sketching without looking at her too much, hiding behind my lowered eyelids:).

My studio is quite nice. It has light, it is tri-angular, it is my kitchen too. The studio has three windows and one door, and a circular wooden staircase which leads to the room upstairs.

It has a leather chair, Oscar’s favourite, (and Oscar and Knut are often fighting for that chair:) - also an old Ikea chair which makes your butt ache after little time;) it has a big working table, and a dining table with 4 chairs. The kitchen is where I cook, (or not lol) and mix my pigments, it has a nice wooden bar and there are two barchairs. The cats like to sit on the bar, or walk around the kitchen area in general….They also like to sit by the window on that little wooden closet, look out on the street and greet the people walking by.
