Sunny Pictures of Paris for a Rainy Day

Paris, May 16th. We are all waiting for the sunshine, but for now the sun is not “happening”. I have more sunny pictures for you, let’s continue our walk through Paris. We are still in the 6th (Quai Voltaire) and in the 5th arrondissement (Nôtre Dame, St. Michel). Narrow streets with old houses, grands boulevards, galleries, boutiques…Enjoy the colors.

Trodadero and Eiffeltower on a misty day - Watercolor painting

Trodadero and Eiffeltower on a misty day – Watercolor painting

Dear Friends, while you are probably all slowing down right now, preparing for a relaxed Christmas or other celebrations, please enjoy the first guest post from Blogwriter Thomas from the “LOCALERS”, with whom I teamed up for blogposts exchanges because I like their style. The “LOCALERS” are Paris specialists and offer charming tours with local guides. Don’t hesitate to visit their website and blog, you’ll enjoy the description of culinary, literary, fashionable and historical Paris.

Belleville and Père Lachaise Tour

An alternative walk around Belleville and Père Lachaise with writer, poetry reading host, and all round funny guy Albert.

Coming to Paris for the first time? Perhaps you’ve been here before and you are looking to discover a part of the city untouched by the herds of tourists? Whatever the reason, Albert’s tour of the unseen, quirky spots around Belleville and the enchanting Père Lachaise cemetery is a tour not to be missed.

Albert has been living by Père Lachaise for years and knows the area intimately.

When he’s not writing or hosting his extremely popular weekly poetry night, Spoken Work, you will often find him exploring his neighbourhood on the lookout for whatever might cross his path. Some of these wonderful gems feature in his off the beaten track tour of Belleville and Père Lachaise.  This is an area steeped in legend well worth the detour!

Skyline of Paris seen from the 6th floor at the Centre Pompidou

Skyline of Paris (view of the Eastern part) from the Centre Pompidou in Paris. ink on paper

Same day, I went to see another exhibition, at the Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg) “GERHARD RICHTER”, a contemporary German artist. Intriguing. Huge paintings, like photos, in often somber colors, strong statements too, and also completely abstract works which spoke to me through their bright tones. I couldn’t sketch there, first because Richter’s works did”nt want to be sketched, and second, it’s not an intimate place like the Pinacothèque is. At Centre Pompidou, up there on the 6th floor, you feel very aloft, and exposed and in wide space. Now, PARIS wanted to be sketched, and it’s so relaxing…

PINACOTHEQUE DE PARIS – la collection Netter – having fun sketching at the exhibition

I offered myself a day at the museum last week, I went to see  and sketch (with an ink pen) a collection of paintings from Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Kisling and some other “Montparnasse” painters.

This here is a color study of one of Suzanne Valadon’s paintings.  “Portrait de Maria Lani

Here some more information about Suzanne Valadon, “beautiful and free-spirited”

I loved her color combinations and wrote down every little detail about the color composition.  I did the coloring at home, as the oil pastels can get really messy, and there were so many people there in the exhibition….

Weird, those classifiactions on NNDB, don’t you think?

Well, let’s continue our window-shopping!

We still walk on Boulevard Haussmann, and Rue Tronchet towards the “Madeleine”. Shalimar, I always loved this name and the scent, and I like this poetic decoration.

This is one of the famous “Paul” bakeries, once a shop specialized in ivory and scute, (I just learned this word “scute”, I hope it’s correct)  called “THE TURTLES”

This is opposite of the church Madeleine, it’s ERES, very (very) expensive swimming suits and sun dresses

”Petit Bateau”, very famous brand for kid’s underwear, expensive and “bon chic bon genre”, meaning a bit bourgeois :)

I liked this decoration in the shoe-shop Rue Tronchet, those shoes are not “bon marché” = cheap

I have still more photos for you in my bag for the next post! Take care and have a wonderful day !

The Old Barge (La vieille péniche)

One day it’s the big city and windowshopping, the next day it’s a walk by the river Marne.  When I go home from my dayjob in the early evening, I often take “the long way” home. I get off the train later, and walk alongside the river.

There is this old barge, rusting away but still beautiful. I think the barge serves as a kitchen to a little restaurant. They serve “tajines“. A metal bridge connects restaurant and ship. I stood and sketched, and when I was almost done, raindrops began to fall on the page:)

Windowshopping on a Sunday afternoon in Paris…(continuation)

DRAFTY TRAINSTATIONS AND DISCO IN THE BUS

The train stopped for a long time in a tunnel, we never knew why, I fiddled around with my camera, trying to figure out how to make that flash come out only when I WANT IT. This picture blurred. I did that on purpose…

to be continued…

Yummie !

RER station at Chatelet – you’ll find always people in the heart of Paris, even on a cold Sunday in June,

RER STATION AT AUBER – deserted !

The sound blasted, the dancers hooted, the bus shook! – at 4 in the afternoon, they made me smile…
